What We Do

The Alberni Valley Breast Connections Society (AVBC) exists to provide practical help, emotional support, and a sense of community for individuals in the Alberni Valley who are living with breast cancer. Our work takes many forms, always guided by the needs of those we serve.

Financial Assistance and Essential Supports

A breast cancer diagnosis often brings financial stress on top of medical and emotional challenges. We provide direct financial assistance to help with:

  • Transportation costs for medical appointments outside the Alberni Valley
  • Wigs, prosthetics, and specialized garments not always covered by health plans
  • Home and personal care items that make treatment and recovery more manageable
  • Access to wellness and complementary therapies that promote comfort and quality of life

Our goal is to ease immediate pressures so individuals can focus on healing.

Building a Supportive Community

Facing breast cancer can feel isolating. AVBC works to ensure no one goes through it alone. We create safe, supportive spaces where individuals can share experiences and encouragement, including:

  • A private online support group that connects members at any time of day
  • In-person gatherings and peer support activities that strengthen bonds and reduce isolation
  • Outreach to newly diagnosed individuals so they know help is available from day one

These connections form a circle of support that many describe as a “familyhood” of care and understanding.

Advocacy, Awareness, and Education

We advocate for greater awareness of breast cancer and for wellness approaches that recognize the whole person. This includes:

  • Hosting local events and information sessions to share resources and build community knowledge
  • Promoting early detection, self-care, and access to services in the Alberni Valley
  • Working to ensure people in smaller communities have the same supports and awareness as those in larger centers

Through these efforts, we give voice to the needs and concerns of people with breast cancer while encouraging a culture of compassion and awareness.

Every individual’s journey with breast cancer is unique, but no one should face it without support. By providing financial relief, community connection, and advocacy for wellness, AVBC ensures that those living with breast cancer in the Alberni Valley have a network to lean on at every step.
